The fourth annual Focus on Farming Conference, "From Soils to Sales" will be held on Thursday, November 29 at the Lynnwood Convention Center. The conference is a joint program of Snohomish County, King County and NABC.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Fred Kirschenmann. Kirschenmann is a longtime leader in national and international sustainable agriculture and Distinguished Fellow at Iowa State University's Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. His 3,500 acre organic farm in North Dakota was one of the first to make the transition from conventional to organic.

Kirschenmann has written extensively about agriculture. He argues, “We must reduce our ecological footprint if we are to preserve the “health of the land.” As Aldo Leopold, the “father” of wildlife management and of the United States’ wilderness system observed, “health is the capacity of the land for self-renewal.” Without that capacity there can be no economic growth, let alone sustainable agriculture. And we are seriously undermining that capacity.”

In addition to Dr. Kirschenmann’s keynote address, the conference will include informative tracks on marketing, local and organic food, water issues, the nursery industry, finance, the environment and farming. Sessions will be presented by local, regional, and national experts.

Online and mail-in registration begins in September. Cost to attend is $30 per person, $40 beginning November 15 and at the door (youth under 18 are $10.00 and must be pre-registered).
